Exhibit traces 300 years at Verdmont

An exhibit at historic house Verdmont aimed at telling the stories of all those who have lived and worked there over for the past 300 years has now opened.

'Verdmont – A House and Its People' includes a display on the history of all the people associated with the Collectors Hill house, built around 1710 and now operated as a museum by the Bermuda National Trust.

"Objects, pictures and text have been combined to create a stunning display that provides historical record and insight into the story of the house and the people who lived and worked there," said a Bermuda National Trust spokesperson. "Topics include information on the owners, those enslaved at Verdmont, living in times without electricity, the location and architecture of this grand old house."

The National Trust noted that Verdmont is almost unchanged since its construction about 300 years ago, and includes original cedar furniture.

Opening hours through August are Monday through Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is located at 6 Verdmont Lane, off Collectors Hill, Smith's parish. The museum can be reached by telephone on 236-7369.

Father and daughter donate to WindReach

Derek Smith and his daughter Deshae-Sampson Smith decided they wanted to do something to help improve the lives of disabled children.

The pair donated $500 to WindReach Recreational Village yesterday, the proceeds of a supper and dance held to benefit the charity last month. "I just wanted to do something for disabled children," said Mr. Smith.

The money donated will be put forward towards a dental fund. "We are thrilled that Derek thought of us," said WindReach executive director Lance Furbert. "We greatly appreciate people like Derek who make an individual effort to help us. It's one of the things that keep WindReach going."

Bank staff clean up Parsons Lane

Bank of Butterfield staff helped clear Parsons Lane of more than 800 lbs of garbage.

A team of volunteers worked with KBB field director Eugene Harvey as part of the bank's corporate social responsibility efforts, clearing trash and bulky waste.

"Our employees all expressed appreciation at being allowed to participate," said bank President and CEO Alan Thompson. "They all had a great time cleaning up the woodland while building their teamwork skills."

Said Dr. Harvey: "People of this calibre do so much for us. This type of action is critically necessary if Bermuda is to rid itself of the terrible weight of trash that currently litters the land."

Teen earns deFontes voice scholarship

Teen singer Candace Furbert will be getting a little extra help to reach the high notes this year.

The Ensemble Singers awarded the 17-year-old Berkeley Institute graduate the first Anne-Marie deFontes Voice Scholarship for her commitment to the study of singing.

The late Mrs. deFontes performed with the Ensemble Singers for many years and was also a member of a number of Bermuda choirs. Her family sponsors the $2,500 scholarship.
