Disgraced doctor charged with assaulting wife

A former King Edward VII Memorial Hospital doctor has appeared in a Trinidad court accused of assaulting his wife.

Nigerian-born Olubukunmi Ewedemi left Bermuda earlier this month after being given a four-month suspended prison sentence for going on a spending spree with his colleagues' bank cards.

On Monday this week, he faced a magistrate in Trinidad charged with beating his wife, malicious damage to property and stealing two cell phones and a handbag.

According to Trinidad and Tobago's Newsday, his wife Dionne Ewedemi told the court her husband returned to Trinidad last Friday, broke down her bedroom door and beat her.

However, Mrs. Ewedemi declined to give evidence but is quoted saying: "I just want him deported back to Nigeria — that's all."

Magistrate Melvin Daniel ordered the Trinidad immigration department to take charge of Ewedemi and investigate whether he is in that country illegally.

Bermuda Magistrates' Court heard last month how Ewedemi, a surgical resident at KEMH, stole colleagues' bank cards and bought a $369 DVD recorder, $359 worth of DVDs and a colour printer worth $539. The 35-year-old, who lived at Home Port Drive, Hamilton Parish, was sentenced to four months in prison for each of five dishonesty offences; serving ten days immediately with the remaining time suspended.

British Airways pilot diverts to avoid storm

Tuesday evening's British Airways flight to Bermuda was diverted to Boston because of a thunderstorm.

L.F. Wade International Airport General Manager Aaron Adderley said the pilot circled the Island hoping for better weather for more than an hour before heading to Boston Logan to refuel.

It got back to Bermuda at 11.30 p.m., four or five hours later than expected, with the next flight to England delayed until 1.40 a.m. as a result. Mr. Adderley told The Royal Gazette: "The pilot wanted to make a precise approach into Bermuda.

"Visibility was there for him to go ahead and land, but he decided to circle the Island for better weather so he could be more comfortable. After an hour he went back to Boston, to top up with fuel and come back later."

Woman admits shoplifting from Warwick Gas

A woman was caught shoplifting food and cans of soda from Warwick Gas Station.

Johanna Knowlton, 55, stole the items despite having the money to pay for them, a court heard. She pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court yesterday to theft. Crown counsel Kae Thomas said Knowlton stole a packet of Lays potato chips, two bottles of Diet Coke, a bottle of regular Coke, a Healthy Choice meal and a 'Chicken of the Sea Salmon' meal, to the value of $18.19.

The incident took place on March 17 at 5.30 p.m. Ms Thomas said: "A member of staff observed her acting suspiciously. She placed the items into a carrier bag and walked out of the store without paying."

When Knowlton, of Warwick, returned to the gas station at 5.10 p.m. the next day and was arrested. She told officers: "That's me, I did it."

The court heard the defendant had no previous convictions. Defence lawyer Peter Farge said: "She was a bit confused at the time. She had money at the time."

Knowlton said she was currently on medication. "I was not hearing voices or anything, but I am guilty of theft at the Warwick Gas Station," she said.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo adjourned sentencing until July 20.
