Man fined $600 for threatening ex-girlfriend

A 30-year-old Devonshire man was fined $600 for threatening his ex-girlfriend.

Crown counsel Auralee Cassidy told Magistrates' Court that Carol Ann Tucker went to the Hamilton Police Station on Sunday, complaining that Shawn Eve had threatened to kill her.

While Ms Tucker was giving her statement to officers, her cellular phone rang. She looked at the caller identification screen and noticed the caller was Eve.

Ms Tucker put the phone on speaker as Eve said: "Yeah I'm going to f****** kill you. Your days are numbered."

Eve then sent her a text message repeating the threat.

The woman told the officers she was frightened by the threats because Eve had hit her in the past.

Her fears were so great she said, that she had checked into a hotel for her own protection.

Eve was later arrested.

Yesterday, he told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that he was sorry.

"I was saying it out of anger," he said. "I wasn't going to go through with it. I have a little daughter to live for."

Eve, who has previous convictions of a similar manner, was fined $600.

Small brush fire quickly put out

Firefighters were called out to a bush fire behind Ace's nursery in Woodbourne Avenue, Hamilton, yesterday.

A 10-feet by 20-feet patch of trees was damaged in the incident, thought to have been started deliberately, at about 6 p.m.

Two fire engines attended, with six officers taking about a minute to extinguish the flames before wetting down the area. No damage was caused to any buildings.

Sgt. Raymond Masters said the fire had started to spread because of the dry weather, but it was a straightforward job putting it out as it had been reported very quickly.

Three arrested on drinks driving charges

Police made three arrests on suspicion of impaired driving at the weekend.

There were also 11 reported road accidents resulting in injury and nine damage-only collisions.

Officers are also investigating five stolen vehicles and five burglaries.

Join the Island-wide litter clean up

A huge clean-up of the litter blighting Bermuda's landscape is planned for this weekend — and KBB wants you to get involved.

The charity is asking the Island's residents to take part in the spring clean on Saturday by joining forces with friends, neighbours and colleagues and tackling trash in every parish.

A KBB spokeswoman said: "Litter is damaging our Island's beauty. KBB is looking for volunteers in every parish to pitch in.

"Now is the time for people to sign up. Choose your own littered area or call KBB to find a location near you. Spend a few hours picking up rubbish to help Keep Bermuda Beautiful."

KBB volunteers picked up 8,000 lbs of rubbish during 2008 and the charity says litter is a growing problem.

The spokeswoman warned: "There is a correct way to dispose of waste materials. Careless littering and illegal dumping, if left unchecked, will soon become a critical problem for our residents and visitors alike.

"Awareness and education are the keys to reducing Bermuda's litter problem. One incident at a time may seem innocent, but multiply it by a hundredfold and the impact is easy to spot."

Volunteers are reminded to put regular trash into black bags and tin, aluminium and glass into blue bags and to call the charity afterwards to report the number of each.

Students taking part can receive credit for community service for their involvement.

Hospitals Board honours nurses

The Bermuda Hospitals Board is to pay tribute to its 'angels of mercy with a special luncheon to mark Nurses' Week.

Nursing professionals from across the Island will attend a meal at Camden House on Friday.

The theme of Nurses' Week 2009 is 'Delivering Quality, Serving Communities, Nurses Leading Care Innovations', to highlight improvements in the health of patients, populations and health systems that result from nursing initiatives.

David Hill, BHB CEO, said: "Nurses play a vital role in health care. They head up specialised clinics in such areas as diabetes, mental health, asthma and wound care.

"They are often the first and primary point of contact for medical care.

"Because they are on the front lines, they are in a unique position to evaluate patient needs and offer innovative solutions to gaps in service.

"Our skilled, experienced and professional nurses are at the heart of this community's health care services."

Judy Richardson, BHB acting chief nurse, quality and risk officer, said: "Innovative solutions by nurses represent a vital element in addressing current and future health challenges.

"These challenges include an ageing population, possible global pandemics, inadequate health care resources and workforce shortages.

"The need for innovative solutions has never been greater as medical experts struggle to provide equitable, safe and effective services, while containing costs.

"Our hospitals and our community are grateful to nursing professionals for their role in providing quality patient care."

Woman injured in road crash

A woman was taken to hospital with chest pain after a road accident in Hamilton Parish at the weekend.

The 53-year-old also complained of having a sore head on her admittance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. She was later discharged.

The woman was heading west in a silver Suzuki Swift when it was in collision with an eastbound red Nissan March, at around 4.20 p.m. Sunday in North Shore Road near Green Bay Road.

The Nissan driver, a 43-year-old Hamilton Parish man, and his wife and two children were uninjured.

A Police spokesman said: "The driver of the westbound car, a 53-year-old Southampton woman, complained of pain to her chest and head. She was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment of her injuries.

"Both cars received extensive front-end damage. Inquiries into this incident are underway."
