Pembroke man charged in Cup Match riot
A Pembroke man involved with the Cup Match riot on July 31, appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday charged with assaulting Police officers.
Kershon Burt, 21, of North Street, pleaded guilty yesterday to assaulting two Police officers and violently resisting arrest on Saturday.
He told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner yesterday: "I went for my boy's birthday and I was highly intoxicated. I don't even remember what happened, that's why I pleaded guilty to all that."
Earlier this summer, on July 31, Burt admitted his involvement in a massive brawl on Wellington Oval in St. George's and to using a glass bottle as an offensive weapon. He spent six weeks in jail for the offence.
Yesterday the court heard that Police were on patrol on Front Street at 2.30 a.m. on Saturday when they saw a group of young men suspected to be affiliated with a gang.
Officers approached the group, when one of the young men now known as Burt began shouting and waving his hands about in a violent manner. Burt pushed an arresting officer away, and needed to be restrained using Captor Spray, the court heard.
He was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station where he continued acting in a violent manner towards another officer.
A social inquiry report has been ordered for Burt, who will be sentenced on December 22. He was remanded in Police custody until that date.
Unemployed man says he stole from shops out of need
A man recently laid off from his job admitted stealing from two grocery stores out of need.
Peter Charles O'Neil, 26, stole meats and body lotion, valued at $82.61 from the Market Place, in Hamilton, on November 2. He also admitted stealing four bottles of alcohol from Lindo's Family Foods, in Devonshire, on November 10.
In Magistrates' Court he said: "When I took the food I was hungry, I took the liquor because I have a problem with alcohol.
"I did apologise to the managers at both stores. I am sorry for what I did, it won't happen any more."
O'Neil, of Malabar Close, in Sandys, said he was laid off from his job in September and has not found work since.
The court heard that he entered the Market Place store at 4.45 p.m. and placed three bottles of Jergins lotion and one Shoprite brand of lotion in his basket. Moments later he was seen by staff with an empty cart.
O'Neil did the same with the meat products, all of which he placed in his black knapsack. He proceeded to leave the store when staff stopped him and asked to see the contents of the bag.
A similar thing happened on November 10 at Lindo's when O'Neil tried to leave the store without paying for a bottle of Black Seal and two bottles of Henessey, valued at $160.
He was spotted by the store's employees, who called the Police. In a taped interview, O'Neil said he deliberately came to the store to steal liquor.
Duty defence counsel Shade Subair, suggested that O'Neil, a self-confessed alcoholic, would be a good referral for drug court.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner took this into account and ordered a social inquiry report and BARC report for the Sandys man, who will be back in court on January 29.
O'Neil was remanded in Police custody until then.
Christmas in jail for man who stole $2,000 of cigarettes
A man who stole almost $2,000 worth of cigarettes will be remanded in prison over Christmas.
Craig Stapff, 46, of no fixed abode, admitted stealing a total of 26 cigarette cartons on three separate occasions.
He will face sentencing on January 21 in Magistrates' Court, after a social inquiry and BARC report have been done. Stapff was remanded into Police custody until that time.
The court heard that Stapff stole the cigarettes between October 6 and December 1, from the Modern Mart, on South Road, in Paget. The first occasion he stole nine cartons of cigarettes, valued at $675; while on the second he stole 15 cartons, valued at $1,125.
On the most recent occasion, he stole two cartons of Marlboro cigarettes, valued at $150 and waved around a knife in a threatening manner.
He told Police: "I only took up the knife because the (staff) would not let me pass."
The self-employed electrician and handy man, said he stole the cigarettes to help support a drug habit.
Duty defence counsel Shade Subair believed Stapff had not benefited from past drug treatment facilities and urged Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner to refer him to drug court, so he could get proper rehabilitation.
"He will continue to be a prevalent nuisance to society and himself. He needs treatment," she said.
