Conditional discharge for possessing drug equipment
A Devonshire man was given a 12-month conditional discharge after pleading guilty to possessing drug equipment.
Jovol Virgil, 21, was charged in Magistrates' Court to possessing a grinder.
Police saw Virgil standing in a Pembroke parking lot with four other individuals on March 13.
When they approached the group, the officers saw Virgil grip his jacket pocket and try to walk away. The officers stopped him and, smelling cannabis smoke, searched him, finding a silver and green container containing plantlike residue.
When asked what the container was, he told Police: "It's a grinder. I use it to grind weed."
Virgil was arrested, and lab testing confirmed that the plant residue was cannabis.
Pleading guilty, Virgil told Magistrates' Court that he had never used the grinder to grind marijuana.
"That grinder is sold in stores, and I have no recollection of saying I use it to grind weed," said Virgil.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo replied: "You probably have no recollection because of the state you were in."
