Cruise ship diverts to Island

A cruise ship was diverted to Bermuda yesterday so a sick passenger could get medical treatment.

The 54-year-old Canadian man took ill on board the Crown Princess on Sunday evening when it was about 420 miles to the south west of the Island.

The ship, which was travelling from Florida to Gibraltar, came into Bermuda waters about 4.30 p.m. yesterday and was met at the sea buoy off the east end by the pilot boat The St. David.

The patient was transferred to the boat, along with his wife, and taken to Ordnance Island, where an ambulance was waiting to take them to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesman said the man had a medical condition which required hospital treatment. The Princess Cruises ship continued on its journey.
