Dog owner must pay compensation
ordered to pay $1,300 in compensation after pleading guilty to keeping a dog which killed a pedigree Pomeranian.
Roger Raynor, of Scenic Heights, was charged with the offence after his dog ran out of his yard and bit a male Pomeranian which was being walked on a leash by its owner.
The court heard that Patricia Caisey was walking her dog along Scenic Heights on May 27 when the cross breed dog ran out of Raynor's yard and grabbed her pet.
Raynor's wife ran to help and the dog dropped its victim and went back in its kennel. The lifeless Pomeranian was taken to a veterinarian who performed an autopsy.
The Pomeranian had five puncture wounds and a lacerated liver, right lung and thorax. The cause of death was put down to the collapsed right lung.
The chief dog warden and Police officers visited Raynor and concluded that his dog was roaming his property before the attack occurred.
He was told to run a line across the yard to keep his pet attached to when he let it out of the kennel which he had since done, said Crown Counsel Leighton Rochester.
Raynor apologised for what had happened and offered to replace Ms Caisey's pet which was estimated to have cost her about $1,300 according to information presented by Mr. Rochester to the court.
Senior Magistrate Will Francis fined Raynor $500 and ordered him to pay $1,300 in compensation by the end of the year.
