Dreams come true for new lawyer

Dream girl: Charleda Mahon Gibbons was called to the Bermuda Bar on Friday.

In less than four weeks a woman got married and fulfilled a lifelong dream of being called to the Bar.

Charleda Mahon Gibbons, 29, was welcomed to The Bermuda Bar as family, friends and new husband Chris Gibbons looked on in Supreme Court on Friday.

Since graduating from The Berkeley Institute in 1998, Mrs. Gibbons began the long road to becoming a lawyer. She started off by getting an Associates Degree in Business Administration from Bermuda College and then got a Bachelors in Law from the University of Kent in Canterbury, UK.

After coming back to Bermuda to work and getting her Masters in Business Management in St. Louis, Missouri — Mrs. Gibbons finally attained her diploma in legal practice from the University of Westminster in London, England.

She currently works for Lynda Milligan-Whyte & Associates where she will be dealing with both corporate and private clients.

Mrs. Gibbons told The Royal Gazette: "All my dreams are coming true in this one year. I got married on October 10 to the man of my dreams and then I fulfilled another dream of being called to the Bar."

Mrs. Gibbons said she didn't accomplish these goals on her own and thanked her parents, mentor and husband for his unwavering support.

"He was instrumental in my last year. He supported me through my most difficult times and he encouraged me and studied with me and never got tired about hearing about the law.

"He made it that much easier because he was totally supportive of my dreams and my interests. He carried my bag home when I was tired, sometimes he drove me home from school and he always told me to stick it out."

Lawyer and mentor Cheryl-Ann Mapp said she felt very proud of Mrs. Gibbons. "It has not been an easy road for her at all. It was her sheer determination and unwavering intestinal fortitude that got her through.

"I think she will make an excellent attorney. She is highly organised, works well under pressure and she is always meticulous and well spoken."
