A Pembroke man has been fined $1,000 for possessing cannabis found by Police under his bike seat.

David Mack Baker, of Deepdale Road, admitted possessing 20.48 grammes of the drug when he appeared in Magistrates' Court on June 24. Sentencing had been delayed for a social inquiry report.

The 20-year-old said he bought the cannabis for his own personal use.

The court heard that Baker was driving through North Hamilton on March 7 when he was stopped at a Police roadblock.

He was searched by officers, who found three plastic twists of cannabis under his bike seat.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner told the court Baker could have been charged with intent to supply as he had more than the legal threshold of 20 grammes.

"I don't buy the stuff myself, but from sitting here in this court and hearing these offences day after day, this seems to be a lot of drugs," said Mr. Warner. "You should be glad you were charged with possession."
