Eggs in Bermuda are not affected by the US recall

Eggs recalled in the US due to a salmonella scare have not been distributed in Bermuda, the chief medical officer has advised.

Dr. John Cann said eggs imported to the Island come from North Carolina, Virginia and Pennsylvania and have not been linked with the salmonella enteriditis outbreak in the States.

He said there had been "no problem" with local eggs, which are considered safe for consumption.

The Department of Health is monitoring the mass recall of some shell eggs in the US due to a nationwide increase there in salmonella cases.

Dr. Cann said eggs were safe when handled properly and issued the following advice:

• Avoid using raw or undercooked eggs.

l Cooking eggs well and hard boiling them can kill salmonella enteritidis bacteria.

l Avoid using raw eggs for Caesar salad and hollandaise sauce — use pasteurised eggs.

l Raw/shell eggs are considered high risk and should be stored in the fridge.

l Wash hands and food preparation areas with soap and water after contact with raw eggs.
