Escaped prisoner writes on Facebook that he plans to turn himself in

On the run: Alvone Maybury.

Facebook Fugitive Alvone Maybury, whose tale has been reported across the world, wrote last night that he planned to turn himself in.

He posted a message on the social networking site at about 7.30 p.m. which read: "I'm coming in soon I just wanna go for a dip first." Police said shortly before 10.30 p.m. that he was still at large.

Maybury's brazen daylight escape from prison custody on Tuesday, and his subsequent taunts to Police on the popular social network Facebook, have appeared in newspapers as far away as New Zealand.

Since his escape, Maybury, who is facing a number of gun-related charges, has bragged on his Facebook account of eating KFC, playing video games and having a sexual liaison with a woman.

On Thursday, he said he planned to turn himself in that evening, when the temperature had dropped. But Thursday night came and went without him having done so.

Earlier yesterday evening, The Royal Gazette sent a message to Maybury, who has been updating reporters on his actions since his escape, to see if he still planned to give himself up to Police.

He didn't give a definitive answer but said he was "done talking" to the media.

He wrote: "I'ma make a new Facebook anyway.

"Another thing I'm not with no family or friends cause I don't trust nobody."

Even before Maybury wrote to The Royal Gazette, his use of Facebook had dramatically dropped. Within his first 24 hours of freedom he posted on the website 16 times. Until his latest status, he had not publicly posted on it since 8 p.m. Thursday evening nor had he spoken with other media outlets.

The post last night said: "Alvone Maybury I$ $[AT]y!n, people out there need to stop lying sayin they saw me when they really didn't and no!! I wasn't on no bike with no f***** kid. Please mr. Police boys don't go kickin in my lil sons house door over lying what people are sayin. If you do go there I'm sure her and her B.friend would let you look so take it easy."

Maybury, who has complained repeatedly of his treatment at the Westgate Correctional Facility, added: "You need to go up the jail a go around n ask all the nigggas who are down' time how they feel about how the jail is being ran n then you would see why I don't wanna go back.

"I wish I could I get everybody out dat hell hole so they people who run can't make no money. [They] need to stop tryin to put people under the jail n do more to help people with their life."

Yesterday, chartered psychologist Susan Adhemar said Maybury's behaviour was "childlike" and exhibited a "sense of entitlement".

Dr. Adhemar said that while Maybury had a tough childhood — having lost both parents when he was young and been a ward of the state for a period before he was sent to an overseas reform school — it did not excuse his behaviour.

"He is a 'victim', but that does not justify attempts to 'victimise' others, or to do whatever he feels like," she said. "The feelings are dictating the behaviours instead of more adult responses. People who continue to act in a childlike, egocentric or even narcissistic manner, have not yet achieved 'adulthood' in the true sense.

"They still feel entitled to do whatever they want and expect others to continually meet their needs, just like any infant or child. Taking responsibility for behaviour, instead of justifying themselves or their behaviours, might indicate a chance for willingness to move into 'adult'."

She added that Maybury's Facebook correspondence with the media indicated he was not willing to take responsibility for his behaviour.

And the public's attention is adding fuel to the fire, especially those spurring him on.

"His bad behaviour is being reinforced," she said. "He is getting attention and enjoying it. The public is patting him on the back for being a bad boy."

A special task force has been established by Bermuda Police Service and Department of Corrections to search for Maybury. CrimeStoppers has also offered a reward for anyone with information on Maybury's whereabouts.
