FBI helps in major narcotics inquiry
Police are remaining tight-lipped over reports that a local man is likely to appear in court today in connection with a major drugs investigation.
The Royal Gazette understands that the man is likely to appear in court later today in connection with the seizure of a small boat in December.
And it is also understood that the investigation has already led to the conviction of Alphonso Cyril Holder of St. Vincent on immigration charges on December 22.
The investigation was conducted by Police narcotics officers collaborating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Agency.
Holder pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court in December to landing in Bermuda on December 19 illegally.
When questioned by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner, Principal crown Counsel Dorien Taylor said that Holder landed in Bermuda "the same day'' as the immigration violation''.
Police launch major drugs inquiry When duty counsel Elizabeth Christopher recommended that Holder be deported quickly, Mr. Taylor told Mr. Warner that "an investigation is continuing with regard to this accused on another matter''.
The St. Vincentian was escorted by three Narcotics officers, including a Police Inspector.
The Royal Gazette understands that a boat had already been seized by Police and Customs under suspicion of having carried drugs. It is not known if any drugs were found on board.
It is also understood that Holder is still being held at Westgate Correctional Facility on remand even though all the necessary steps for his deportation are complete.
A Police Media Relations Department spokeswoman refused to comment when asked about the investigation and would not confirm any aspect of the case surrounding Holder.
