Firemen protest over pay dispute

A sign on a car outside of the Hamilton Fire Station reads "Banks don't want heroes they want $$$$$" yesterday. The off-duty firemen walked through the streets of Hamilton to protest for more money.

A pay dispute between the Bermuda Public Services Union (BPSU) and the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service led approximately 30 firemen to stage a protest around the City of Hamilton yesterday.

The dispute arose after a review of the firefighters' salaries was ordered by the BPSU.

According to a spokesperson, the protest didn't cause a disruption in service as the firefighters involved were all off-duty.

Acting Minister of Labour, Home Affairs and Housing, Walter Roban said yesterday evening that he had referred the matter to the Labour Disputes Tribunal for settlement.

"As this is now in arbitration, I cannot comment extensively on the matter. However we realise that each and every worker is critical to ensuring that Government operates efficiently and effectively. They provide a service to the community and to the Government that is valued and necessary.

"This Ministry is committed to ensuring that wherever and whenever there are disputes between Government and labour that all sides come to the table and find common ground solutions that uphold the negotiation and arbitration process. It is our hope that all parties involved in this dispute reach a speedy resolution."
