Foreign workers at Sonesta angry
Hotel to complain of staff living conditions.
One hotel worker, who asked to remain anonymous, told The Royal Gazette residents were consistently treated as if they had no rights.
At least 15 workers participated in the unscheduled meeting with Human Resource representatives and a Bermuda Industrial Union official, he said.
In particular, they have been angered by management personnel entering and searching rooms without notice, said the man. At times they have even gone into rooms when occupants were not present, he claimed.
Administrators have also ordered all inhabitants to remove small appliances such as coffee makers and hot plates from their rooms.
But the angry worker pointed out that workers relied on the appliances because of limited cafeteria hours.
And an additional concern was that staff are forbidden to have overnight visitors -- even if the visitors are wives or family members.
The worker said he had contacted Police and Government officials to complain about their treatment.
Some 70 staff pay rent for the single and double occupancy rooms.
The Royal Gazette understands that yesterday's unscheduled meeting with Human Resources representatives was precipitated by the sudden and initially unexplained removal of staff balcony furniture.
Workers said a variety of outdoor items were taken and thrown carelessly into the back of a truck to be disposed.
However, the incident may have simply been a matter of miscommunication.
Another meeting is scheduled for next week after hotel president Dennis Tucker returns from overseas.
Mr. Tucker was unavailable for comment yesterday.
