Nurses are to offer free health screenings as part of events supporting Healthy Heart Month.

Screening for blood pressure, blood sugar, Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist measurement will be available in the lobby of King Edward VII Hospital between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. tomorrow and again on Wednesday, February 25.

"As the number one cause of death for both men and women on our Island and around the world, heart disease affects one in two Bermudians," said Norma Smith, Director of Outpatient Services for Bermuda Hospitals Board.

"Specifically, coronary artery disease, a condition that blocks blood vessels, can lead to a heart attack. This is the most preventable form of cardiac disease," she added.

Research has shown that by controlling risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, weight and physical activity, the chances of developing this debilitating and sometimes fatal condition can be reduced.

"Knowing your risk for heart disease can lessen your odds of a cardiac incident. Understanding these vital statistics can save your life," added Mrs. Smith.

"Nurses at KEMH are happy to lend their expertise and are grateful to the Bermuda Heart Foundation for supplying equipment and test strips. We invite the public to stop by and learn more about this important health issue."
