A party to benefit orphans in Uganda is planned at Docksiders Pub & Restaurant tomorrow night.

Cassandra Matcham is behind the fund-raiser all monies raised will go directly to the charity Restorers of Hope.

The 21-year-old spent three months volunteering with the organisation after reading about its efforts in The Royal Gazette.

Founded by Bermudian Christine Atcheson, the charity runs a children's home in Gulu, Uganda.

It has helped to shelter, clothe, feed and educate eight children since December — and operates solely on donations.

Partygoers are asked to come out and support the cause and enjoy the music by DJs Choice, SupaJ, SupaTone and Smokey and local bands Secret Popo and Homegrown.

Miss Matcham described the event as a way residents could help out without travelling thousands of miles to east Africa.

"I feel like young people want to get involved and I don't think they know how to. I feel this is a way people can get involved and not give out too much of their time."

Miss Matcham spent much of her time with children from the orphanage during her three months in Uganda — walking them to school and helping out with household chores.

The country, which is recovering from many years of war, was a scary place to be but provided her with a "life-changing" experience, she said.

"When you come back here you see how people take advantage of everything, all the opportunities we have.

"It was really hard to come back and see a grocery store full of stuff we don't need, or people not caring about going to school.

"People were dying to get an education over there."

Tickets for the 9.30 p.m. event cost $20. According to Miss Matcham, that amount is sufficient to pay for two kids' health care for a year.

It can also pay for a child's education for a school term or pay for 20 chickens, roughly 20 meals.

Handmade necklaces and bags will be sold at the event with that money going directly to the African widows who made them.

The items are also on sale at My Serenity on Reid Street — open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9.30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
