Goods needed for school in Ethiopia
A Bermudian teacher who runs a school in Ethiopia is appealing for equipment to take back there next month.
Amadi Selassie, also known as Donnelle Lynch, wants to fill a container with supplies for His Imperial Majesty Institute in Shashamane in the Oromia region.
She and her husband, who have lived in the African country for the past ten years, are looking for photocopiers, computers and laptops, scanners, laminators, printers, educational books for children aged three to seven and other school supplies.
The couple isalso trying to raise $60,000 to help pay for the school's running costs and will hold a bake sale this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at A1 Supermarket in Smith's.
Mrs. Selassie said: "My husband and I have taken a personal vested interest in establishing an educational programme within the community, as we have three children under the age of three who will be educated in Shashamane.
"Until recently there were no facilities in the area for the community to educate their children at the preschool level. Our goal is to build a school for children which can provide a quality free education and employment opportunities for young people in the community.
"In addition, we have also launched an outreach programme for community development i.e. dance, martial arts, cooking, music, gymnastics and computer classes."
Goods for the container, donated by BAS Serco, will be accepted until October 1 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. each day behind Modern Mart in Paget.
Anyone wishing to donate funds to the school should email himinstituteinfo@yahoo.com or call Mrs. Selassie on 517-2196 or Shirika Young at 799-3093. Donations can also be made directly into Bank of Bermuda account number 006010482011.
