Government corrects its autism grant statement

An article which ran in the Royal Gazette on April 5 regarding a $20,000 grant given to Bermuda Autism Support and Education (BASE) was inaccurate.

According to the Permanent Secretary of Health Warren W. Jones there was an error in the information provided by his Ministry.

"I need to publicly apologise because in fact, the Ministry of Health will be providing this grant to Tomorrow's Voices — Bermuda Autism Early Intervention Centre," he said in a statement.

"Since 2008, the Ministry of Health has been providing this grant to Tomorrow's Voices and unfortunately I provided the wrong information for the statement which was made in recognition of World Autism Awareness Day. I am hopeful that this release clarifies any confusion that might have been caused as a result of that announcement."

This newspaper and other media outlets had reported that the grant was actually intended for BASE in support of its education centre after acting Health Minister Zane DeSilva announced the grant on April 2 which was World Autism Awareness Day.

In an e-mail sent to the Royal Gazette last night, a BASE spokesman said that the charity will make an announcement today in response to the news.
