Homeless man broke into house to take water, bread and peanut butter

A homeless man admitted to charges of prowling, trespassing and stealing food yesterday in Magistrates' Court.

Edward Fox, 43, admitted to trespassing on a property on Rosemont Avenue and stealing water, Skippy peanut butter and bread, valued at $9.23 on June 24.

Fox also admitted to prowling on homes on Rosemont Avenue and Pitts Bay Road for the same purpose.

The court heard that a Rosemont Avenue home owner left for work in Hamilton shortly after 8 a.m. on June 24 and returned home later that day to find some items missing from her fridge.

The woman noticed that a window was open in her home and reported the offence to Police.

Another homeowner in the area was home alone when Fox rang her door bell and asked for a man named 'James'. Fox left after being told about the mistake, but was seen the next day lurking outside the same property. The homeowner told Police and a formal complaint was made at the Hamilton Police Station.

A similar incident happened at a Pitts Bay Road residence, the court heard.

A pre-sentencing social inquiry report was ordered for Fox, who will be remanded in Police custody until sentencing on August 29.
