Firearms Amendment– Act 2010

• Allows Police to seek a "warrant of detention" from Supreme Court, allowing them to hold a firearms suspect for 14 days without charging them.

• After 14 days, the Police can seek an extension of another 14 days.

• Penalties for 14 different firearms offences, including possessing a firearm, discharging a firearm and selling firearms increased.

• Illegal to handle ("deal in any manner") a firearm or ammunition without lawful authority.

• Illegal for licenced firearm owners not to report missing firearms or weapons within 24 hours.

• Under-18's cannot receive firearm licences.

Bail Amendment Act 2010

• Police bail can now include conditions such as the surrender of travel documents, curfews, orders to not contact or communicate with certain people or a requirement to wear an electronic tracking device.

• Firearms suspects will no longer have "presumption in favour" of bail, and as a result bail must be argued for in court.
