United Kingdom had committed itself to seeing Bermuda gain independence by 2000 are false.

Mr. John Kelly issued the statement following an official Government inquiry into VSB reports on the United Nations Committee on Decolonisation.

The station reported a committee spokesman saying the UK had given some kind of undertaking to the committee that Bermuda would become independent.

But Mr. Kelly said: "There is no truth that an undertaking was given by Britian in 1985 that Bermuda would become independent by the year 2000.

"The British Government's policy on independence for all of the remaining Dependent Territories is clear.

"It is for the electorates of individual Dependent Territories to decide when and if they wish to take independence.''
