Inquiry launched after sex attacker escapes
A sex attacker branded "dangerous'' was on the run last night after smashing a wall to escape Police custody.
Now Police Commissioner Jean-Jacques Lemay has demanded a full-scale inquiry into Brian Carlton Rogers' escape.
It is the second time the 40-year-old has given Police the slip.
Rogers broke loose from his cell at St. George's Police Station sometime during Monday night after being arrested for violating bail conditions.
He had only recently been released from prison and was arrested by Police on Monday for violation of bail conditions, but was able to escape sometime that night.
Yesterday a Police spokesperson said: "we do consider him to be dangerous.'' They also gave details of his escape saying: "He escaped by force, through a wall.'' The Police spokesperson added: "A TBA (to be arrested) has gone out to all divisions and there is a unit looking for him.'' Mr. Lemay said: "The incident was reported to me mid morning.'' He added: "I have asked for an internal investigation to determine exactly what happened.'' Rogers, a father-of-one, gained notoriety in December 1993 after jumping through a barred window of an extra security holding room at the Prison Farm at Ferry Reach, St. George's.
He had served two years of a ten-year sentence handed down in Supreme Court in February 1991 after he pleaded guilty to beating, sexually assaulting, and threatening the life of his girlfriend, deprivation of liberty and receiving thousands of dollars worth of stolen property.
A team of five Police and four prison officers headed by Insp. Coughlin Gibbons conducted an Island-wide search for Rogers during his week-long evasion from capture.
Police hunt for sex attacker Rogers was sentenced to three years for his jail break and subsequent crime spree that ended in a dramatic Police chase through Pembroke after a week on the loose.
Concerns have been raised about the deterioration of St. George's Police Station in recent weeks. This could have contributed to Rogers' escape.
Rogers is described as 6ft 1in and weighing 200 pounds.
Police would like to remind members of the public that harbouring an escaped prisoner is considered a prosecutable offence.
Anyone with information on Rogers' location is asked to contact Eastern Division at 294-4214.
