Island is already helping Haiti through Caribbean catastrophe facility – Cox
Bermuda's donations towards a Caribbean Insurance Facility will help the victims of a deadly earthquake in Haiti, the Minister of Finance said yesterday.
Paula Cox said that Bermuda has in the past made donations to the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF), which will help the Island nation that suffered a devastating 7.0 earthquake on Tuesday.
Bermuda is the only jurisdiction that has both purchased a policy and has donated money to the CCRIF.
"While we all mourn the very tragic personal toll that the people of Haiti are currently going through, Bermuda is able to assist not just at the micro level in terms of our charitable giving, but also at the macro level," she said.
"We pray for Haiti and can derive some comfort that our participation in the CCRIF will help support the country and people in need.
"However, the Bermudian spirit is one that leaves me in no doubt that this will not be the extent of Bermuda's charitable giving to help a jurisdiction in need."
