Island's senior citizens honoured

The week, which kicks off on Sunday with the Premier's Tea on the lawn of Camden, is jointly sponsored by the Ministries of Community, Culture, and Information Services; Health, Social Services and Housing; and the Island Wide Senior Social Committee.

Highlights will include an opening ceremony at City Hall on Monday at 1.30 p.m., an Ecumenical Service at St. Paul's AME Church on June 6, and a Musical Extravaganza in Victoria Park on June 9.

A half-hour television programme for seniors called Quality of Life will air each Monday for six weeks on VSB11-Cable 4, beginning on May 31.

Community, Culture and Information Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons noted the latest census showed that nine percent of Bermuda's population was 65 or older in 1991, a rise of one percent since 1980.

"It is only fitting that as we in the community reap the fruits of our seniors' labours, we should take the time to recognise and pay homage to them for all of their contributions to the community,'' Mr. Gibbons said.

BICENTENARY ART WINNERS NAMED CPN Bicentenary art winners named The Corporation of Hamilton has announced the winners of its 200th birthday art and essay competition, which will be featured in a special bicentenary booklet.

The competition was open to all residents and entrants were asked to express their feelings about Hamilton in words or images.

Entries were judged by a panel working with criteria that included clarity of expression, creativity and skill in capturing the subject matter, said Corporation secretary Mr. Roger Sherratt. Each entry was reviewed individually with no name attached.

Winner of the grand prize in the art category was Mrs. Marie Evers-Smith for her cityscape depicting a group of Hamilton's landmark buildings, capturing the vibrant spirit of the 200-year-old-city. The grand prize in the essay category went to Ms Ruth Outerbridge for her poem "Hamilton's Harmony'', which gives a guided journey of Hamilton where the reader "meets'' her people and "visits'' her special places. They will each receive $500 gift certificates.

There were also two runners-up in each of the categories, who will receive $250 gift certificates. ARSON PROBE CRM Police suspect arson in a car fire which occurred at a home near Bailey's Bay post office on the weekend.

A white Mazda sports car parked outside the house was completely destroyed by the blaze.

It had apparently been doused with flammable liquid and set on fire, a Police spokesman said.

Police were called to the scene around 2.30 p.m. on Saturday.

Anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area, or who may be able to assist detectives in their investigation, is asked to contact Det. Sgt. Stuart Crockwell at the St. George's Police Station.

DRIVER HITS WALL AC Driver hits wall A 30-year-old Warwick man was arrested for drunk driving around 3 a.m.

yesterday after he lost control of his car and crashed into a wall on Trimingham Hill in Paget.

About 16 feet of the boundary wall was demolished. The car, a Ford Laser, sustained damage to the front and under-carriage.

The man refused to take the alco-analyser and was detained at the Police station. A court appearance is expected in due course.

YOUTHS ARRESTED CRM Youths arrested Three youths who tried to steal an engine from a punt moored off Marine and Ports offices on Crow Lane were arrested on Monday. An observant boat operator reported the incident to Police.

It is believed the youths also stole three other punts which disappeared from their moorings earlier in the day.

WALLET STOLEN CRM Wallet stolen A female visitor returned from a swim at Horseshoe Bay on Sunday afternoon to discover her wallet had been stolen from her beach bag. It contained $300 cash and a number of travellers' cheques.
