Lung cancer patient seeks to organise support group
A lung cancer patient is trying to organise a support group for other sufferers on the Island.
The woman who was diagnosed seven years ago asked not to be named, but feels a group could help others with the illness.
She said lung cancer was a "lonely" disease and admitted she wasn't aware of anyone else on the Island with it.
The woman said her diagnosis came as a "total shock" and it would have helped if she had others to talk with.
"I think people would benefit if there was a support group because cancer is a lonely thing," she explained.
"They have groups for breast cancer, they have one for prostate, but they should have them for all sorts of cancer."
The cancer patient said it has been difficult to start a support group when doctors were unable to give out patient information.
"What am I going to do? Put a big ad in the paper and say 'Do you have lung cancer? Do you want to talk?'," she asked.
Still she thinks speaking with others going through similar struggles would help break down stigmas attached to the disease.
"It is a disease that most people affiliate with smoking when that is totally not the case because there are so many people that have died from it that have never smoked," she said.
