Man injured in armed home attack
Bloody footprints could still be seen on the front porch of a Devonshire residence yesterday, hours after an armed robbery took place.
Police were called to the Upland Street home at 11 p.m. Sunday night following reports that armed men gained entry to the residence and robbed the occupants. Officers have said one man was hurt in the attack. Yesterday they would not release the name or the age of the victim or the cause of his injuries.
A spokesperson said the man was not shot. He would not reveal the number of assailants involved, or the type of weapons they were carrying.
"It appears that armed men gained entry into the residence and robbed the occupants. One of the occupants was injured as a result of being assaulted; however the injury is not believed to be life threatening. A full investigation into this matter is ongoing," the spokesperson said.
The victim was released from the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital yesterday.
Officers scoured what area residents have described as a usually quiet neighbourhood, from 11 p.m. on Sunday until 3.30 a.m. yesterday looking for evidence.
Police were still stationed at the home yesterday afternoon.
Many of those who have lived on the street for decades said they were shocked such a thing could happen there.
"I don't know the young men who live in that home," one resident said. "They moved in recently and never introduced themselves.
"They would say 'good afternoon' when they saw you on the road but that was it. All I know is that they were young, under 30, and liked to BBQ out front a lot. They were social and people were often stopping by."
Another resident said they noticed nothing out of the ordinary Sunday evening.
"I didn't hear any shouting," the person said. "I didn't realise it had happened until I got the paper this morning. I heard some traffic last night, but lately there have been a lot of people speeding along this road so I didn't take any notice. I don't know the people who lived in the house. They are new."
Those that live on the street say nothing similar had ever happened before.
"We generally all know each other," one person said. "Many of us have lived here for decades. It is a quiet place, I was shocked when I heard what happened."
• Police also reported a confirmed firearm incident at 3.35 a.m. in the area of Court and Elliot streets yesterday morning. There were no reported injuries.
