Man tried to smother girlfried
A 23-year-old man appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday to answer to charges of assault.
The court heard from Senior Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney that Blair Richardson attempted to suffocate Shadae Simmons with a pillow in a domestic dispute on July 12 of last year.
Mr. Mahoney told the court that Richardson was at Ms. Simmons' home when an argument ensued. Richardson went into the kitchen and got a knife.
A fight broke out between the two and Richardson threw Ms. Simmons on the bed and attempted to suffocate her with a pillow.
Ms. Simmons told Police she had bruises on her neck from the assault by Richardson and was advised to seek medical attention.
Ms. Simmons suffered multiple bruising to her body, including a one-inch bruise to the left side of her neck.
Richardson admitted to Police that he assaulted her. He said: "Yes, I gripped her around her neck and I felt her body go limp and picked her up and put her on the bed 'til she regained consciousness.
The Khyber Pass Warwick resident told the court: "This is not the first time we have been in situations like this.
"I try to stay away from her but we have a child together so it's difficult we have been to mediation and everything."
He added: "She did stab me so I gripped her around her neck." Richardson then lifted his shirt and showed the court multiple stab wounds he said were inflicted by Ms. Simmons.
"But I didn't press charges, she did," he said.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner adjourned the matter until July 16 pending pre-sentencing reports. Richardson was offered bail in the amount of $2,000.
