National Library expected to reopen by the end of the year; Minister apologises for delays

A revamp of the Bermuda National Library to get rid of mould and asbestos could be finished before the end of the year, according to Minister of Culture and Social Rehabilitation Neletha Butterfield.

Though the work was expected to be completed this fall, Ms Butterfield said there were several unforeseen delays along the way.

She apologised for any inconvenience this may cause, saying: "We understand the importance of the Bermuda National Library for our community but must ensure a healthy and safe environment for patrons.

"I appeal to the community for their understanding as these repairs are carried out. I am pleased to report that, despite some unforeseen delays, work is nearing completion and we fully expect the library to reopen before the end of this year."

New air conditioning units have had to be installed on both the upper and lower levels of the facility and the upper level also had to be painted, recarpeted and the shelving reinstalled.

In addition all books had to be taken away for cleaning, after eight employees complained about the potential health risks of mould in the facility.

Head librarian, Joanne Brangman, also apologised for the length of time it has taken to restore the library to full operational status, but maintained the repairs are necessary.

She said: "The required repair work has involved the meticulous removal and replacement of materials that contained mould and/or were structurally unsound, the storage of books and other holdings off-site while the repair work proceeded, and the careful removal and cleaning of those books before re-shelving.

"The Bermuda National Library is housed in a very old and historic building, and there have been unexpected challenges encountered along the way."

Ms Brangman added: "The staff of the Bermuda National Library would like to apologise to all our valued patrons for the continued delay in reopening the upper level of the Adult Library on Queen Street. The public will be advised shortly, of the planned reopening date of the entire library."
