One car rule tightening

A Bill to crack down on people trying to get around the one car per household rule was tabled in the House of Assembly on Friday.

The act, due to be debated by MPs in the coming weeks, will make it illegal for a person to register a car to an address unless they are actually living there and hold a valid driver's license.

And the bill will also stop landlords from renting out a unit and keeping the registration number to register a second car themselves.

The plan was first mooted by Premier Ewart Brown in April last year where it was claimed that at least 200 cars could be taken out of circulation via rigorous enforcement of the one car per assessment number rule.

Also tabled was an amendment to the Proceeds of Crime Act to allow the seizure of any item used for the offence of money laundering.

And the Contributory Pensions Amendment Act 2008 will exempt full-time students from paying social insurance for weekend and vacation work and end the requirement for a person with a physical or mental disability from having to wait a whole year before they are able to receive a contributory disability benefit.
