Little Zuri Hayward never got to see his first Christmas but that will not stop his parents from filling his nursery with love.

Charlita Hayward and Shawn Smith plan to prepare his room just as they would have, ready for his godparents to meet him for the first time.

Miss Hayward and Mr. Smith buried Zuri at Christ Church, Devonshire, on Wednesday.

The baby boy died last Thursday from pulmonary hypertension, aged just three months.

Miss Hayward, 20, said: "We had no warning signs. It was devastating. He was such a happy, loving baby.

"He was so happy you couldn't have thought anything was wrong with him, and he had so much energy.

"He was a bright, intelligent baby and touched a lot of people's hearts. If you saw him you fell in love with him at first sight."

She said: "It is horrible not to have him here at Christmas. There was so much we wanted to do for him and get for him.

"Zuri's godparents wanted to come and meet him for the first time. But we are still going to set up his room, in tribute to him.

"We were going to get a Christmas tree for Zuri, to see his reaction, but we are just grateful that before he left us he got to see the Christmas Parade, which he really enjoyed."

Miss Hayward, who is training to be a school teacher, said the couple is receiving "a lot of support" from their families and the Boaz Island community.

"We miss him very much," she said. "I think about him all the time.

"Zuri had bright blue-grey, brown eyes which changed, and was as happy as he could be.

"We even used to get tourists stopping us in the street saying how gorgeous he was.

"Everybody misses him. But he had a great send-off at the funeral, the church was full."

She said: "The time we had with him was very precious and very memorable. Zuri will always live on."
