Police officer not to be charged after accident
critically injured will not be charged, it was announced yesterday.
Det. Con. Alex Severin, from the narcotics division, drove the unmarked Police car which was in collision with pedestrian Mr. Keith Williams.
Yesterday Police revealed an inquiry into February's accident in Crawl Hill, Hamilton Parish, had been completed.
Police spokesman Sgt. John Dale said a file had been reviewed by the Attorney General's chambers.
Following advice given to the Commissioner Mr. Clive Donald no charges would be brought, he added.
Attorney General Mr. Walter Maddocks said yesterday: "All I can say is that in my opinion there was no prima facie case against the officer.
"That is the first of the tests we apply.'' The Williams' family lawyer Mr. Julian Hall MP, said yesterday: "All I can say is that nothing really surprises me in Bermuda.'' He added: "I will do whatever I am instructed to do.'' Mr. Williams, 26, was critically injured in the accident at around 7.30 p.m.
on February 20 near TR's Snack Shop.
He was reported to have been catapulted around 10 feet into the air.
The car was moving east along North Shore Road, and was not on a Police assignment. Some people claimed it was travelling at speed.
Mr. Williams, who lives in the area, has since been discharged from King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Hall said Mr. Williams had substantially recovered, although he would suffer some permanent disability. The prognosis was unclear.
