Ross 'Blackie' Talbot is remembered 10 years on

Remembered fondly: Clement Talbot presents Pastor Joseph F Whalen with a cheque for $1,000 on the 10th anniversary of his father's passing, surrounded by friends, family and members of the Ross 'Blackie' Talbot commitee, at his gravesite at the Marsden First United Methodist Church.

Friends and family celebrated the life of Ross 'Blackie' Talbot yesterday on the tenth anniversary of his passing.

Mr Talbot, a member of the celebrated Talbot Brothers musical group and an avid golfer, died in 2000 at the age of 82.

In 1993, to mark Mr Talbot's birthday, his son Clement Talbot organised the Ross 'Blackie' Talbot Charity Classic, an event that over the past 18 years has raised more than $2,500,000 for more than 75 charities.

Clement Talbot said yesterday he was proud to have his father honoured at a ceremony at Marsden's Church.

"Late in his life, he was about just four things. His family, his church, golf and fishing. Those are the things that kept him going.

"He was someone who reached out and took in everyone regardless of race, creed and colour. He saw us all as Bermudians, and we at the charity have moved forward in that same spirit."

Grandson Jordon Talbot, who left his studies at Queen's University to attend the ceremony, said: "I was too young to realise what he did, but now I can understand what kind of an impact he had on the community. Coming down here reminds me of that."
