School reunion marks former head Dalton E. Tucker's 94th birthday

Getting ready: Abigail Frost, Dominique Williams and Christopher Jackson, of Dalton E. Tucker Primary School put the finishing touches on banners for a march with alumni and current students held to mark Ms. Tucker's 94th birthday on Saturday.

Past and present students of Dalton E. Tucker Primary School took to the streets on Saturday to celebrate an important anniversary.

About 100 people took part in a march from White Hill field to the school on Middle Road, Southampton to mark the 94th birthday of the headmistress after whom the school is named.

Current principal Gladstone Thompson told The Royal Gazette: "We invited people who had been at Dalton E. Tucker from the early part of the 20th century to take part.

"It was an opportunity for people to get together and show their appreciation for Mrs. Tucker and the other principals who have served. Mrs. Tucker was here and everybody greeted her and sang happy birthday."

The procession was followed by speeches from local dignitaries, including Opposition leader Kim Swan, PLP backbenchers Randy Horton and Terry Lister and UBP MP Charlie Swan.

"We had about a three-hour concert," said Mr. Thompson.

"The children were singing and Sandys Secondary Middle School Marching Band performed, as well as Lord Necktie.

"It was just a really, really good afternoon. Mrs. Tucker definitely enjoyed it. She got up and gave a little speech about how much she appreciated being there."

Mrs. Tucker was principal at the school, formerly called Southampton Glebe Primary, from 1942 to 1974. It was recently named by the Ministry of Education as one of five public primary schools facing possible closure.
