Catia Cabral, 16, a pupil at Berkeley Institute, was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital soon after midday.

She had come off her bike in the collision with a purple Volkswagon Polo on the roundabout at the junction of Par-la-Ville Road and Serpentine Road.

The female driver of the car was shaken, but not injured.

Traffic was congested for some time until the bike and car were eventually moved.

Catia's father was called to the scene and watched as his daughter was placed on a stretcher and taken into the ambulance.

He said: "I don't know what has happened. I haven't had a chance to talk to my daughter yet, but she seems to be OK. I think she is just going to the hospital to be checked out. She has a pain in her back.'' Anyone with information about the smash should call Police on 295-0011.
