Shadow Housing Minister wants more detail on planned projects
Shadow Housing Minister Donte Hunt has said Government needs to "drill down more" and give better detail on planned projects in their annual Budget. The Opposition MP told the House of Assembly on Monday that he couldn't see an overall plan for housing in the Budget and that the information given on certain schemes — such as interest-free loans for new homeowners — was vague. Of the loans plan, he said: "It doesn't have much form or substance."
He quoted Junior Minister Walter Roban as saying the loans could be used for renovations and questioned how that could be the case.
"How does it work?" asked Mr. Hunt. "How much has been allocated? Have you looked at the number of families that will benefit from this?"
He said the Budget showed an increase of $1.25 million for rental assistance. "I would love to have seen a more drilled down version of this Budget to understand how this increase is being applied, where it's going. "I want to know what does this particularly mean. Does this mean there is an increase in persons that need assistance? Does that mean that right now we are experiencing higher rents?
"Does this mean that there is a greater rental demand. All of these factors, any economist will tell, are important to consider."
