Shadow Transport Minister Michael Fahy has called for "traffic calming measures" after the tenth road death of 2009 over Cup Match weekend.

Senator Fahy spoke out after 33-year-old James Quinn died after his bike collided with a traffic light pole as he was travelling east near the junction of Crow Lane and Corkscrew Hill in Paget at about 1.50 a.m. Saturday. Irishman Mr. Quinn, was an actuary with Deloitte.

Sen. Fahy offered condolences to Mr. Quinn's family and friends on behalf of the United Bermuda Party.

"The tragic death of James Quinn on Cup Match weekend — the tenth road fatality of the year — is one more reminder that Bermuda has a serious problem on our roads."

He said Bermuda needs to have "zero tolerance for drink-driving" and added: "Personal responsibility and care remain the number one way to prevent road accidents, but the Government can do much to reduce the mayhem. We urge it to move forward with simple steps that can have a positive effect on this disturbing state of affairs."

Sen. Fahy recommended Government look at installing a new generation of "cats-eye" road reflectors to provide significant improvement in visibility at night or in poor weather.

He also recommended introducing more skid resistant road surfacing and increased police presence and "traffic calming measures" such as road humps.
