St. George's braces for Igor's arrival
The Town of St. George's began to buckle down yesterday as Hurricane Igor approached the Island.
But while the East End received the worst of Hurricane Fabian, most people in the town expressed optimism that storm wouldn't have the same impact.
"I've got my windows boarded, my generator ready and plenty of batteries," said Laila Ming.
"If you stay in your house, you're fine. It's when you go out storm chasing and taking pictures that you get into trouble."
Rowan Ramotar, General Manager at Somers Supermart, said that business had been steady all week, but had surged on Friday as shoppers prepared their homes.
Pointing out dozens of trays of bread, he said: "We're pretty well stocked up ourselves.
"We're going to play this by ear. We'll be open for business on Saturday morning, but after that, it depends on the weather."
While several stores and attractions had boarded their windows and closed, the Historic St. Peter's Church remained open yesterday, even if few people visited.
"Not many people came today, but that's probably because the cruise ships left early," a spokesperson said.
She added that the church would be closed over the weekend because they don't want people to put themselves in harm's way.
"We'll be closed until Tuesday. The church will be fine, though. We made it through Fabian fine, we made it through Emily fine, and we'll make it through this."
Not far from St. George's, the Crystal Caves will be closing its doors on Sunday and Monday, but a spokesperson said they would reopen as soon as the site is ready.
"Obviously, our first concern is for the cave," she said. "We've done everything we're supposed to do, now we have to just see what happens."
