Summer camp programme wins international recognition
One of Bermuda's summer camp programmes has received international attention.
The Centre's Latchkey after school programme was recently profiled on the front page of the international children's publication, "School-Age''.
Community worker Harold Minors told The Royal Gazette "It is pretty prestigious to be included in an international publication, especially on the front page. It's a feather in the cap for us as well as for Bermuda. The kids are all excited about it.'' The camp -- organised through the Department of Youth, Sport, Parks and Recreation -- is located at the Centre on Angle Street and has a special interest in offering a safe nurturing place for children to go after school.
"I like when we were dancing and when we had the water fights,'' said 11-year-old Antoinette Amory. "It was girls against the boys and the girls won.'' Theresa Rawlins, 14, said: "We had a macarena dance. We also had a Hawaiian Luau and a pyjama party. We got to go swimming and fishing. We had a scavenger hunt and played number games. We love to come to summer camp every year.'' Community worker, Runelle Darrell added: "Our summer-day camp has a week- long overnight camp. It takes place every summer and is held on a different Island each year.
"The camp has between 50 and 60 campers at a time with the right ratio of staff workers.
"The cook travels with us to prepare the food.
"The children get to do fun activities like pyjama parties, beach parties, luaus and arts and crafts, and cooking and homework assistance.'' The Department of Youth and Sport have been operating the camp since 1980.
"The children love it, to them it is a fun way to pass the summer,'' Ms Darrell said.
The summer day camp programme lasts one week beginning in late June or early July.
