Union is hopeful as Government seeks a management consultant

A Government job posting has sparked optimism from the Bermuda Public Services Union that the Civil Service is looking to improve its management capabilities.

Government advertised for a management consultant this week.

The successful candidate will be responsible for improving and maintaining government efficiency and can expect to be paid between $110,000 and $119,478.

The vacancy comes less than a year after the disbanding of Government's management services team. The team, which had been charged with improving efficiency in the Civil Service, had some of its members amalgamated into the human resources department.

BPSU general secretary Ed Ball said on Friday that he hoped the posting was a sign that the Government intends to bring management services back to strength.

"We always knew that they needed to bring on more bodies," said Mr. Ball. "They're the ones who review job descriptions. If Government wants to create a new department or reorganise, they're the ones who step in and take a look at all the permutations that could be affected.

"It had to be done. They definitely need to put more workers in that area, even if it is now at the tail end. It is extremely important."

The advert states that tasks given the consultant will include:

• Work with clients on a projects basis, to analyse, rationalise and reinvent programmes and services in order to achieve strategic and operational goals

• Work with clients to develop policies and procedures

• Perform a critical Government-wide role in the evaluation and grading of individual posts

• Provide general business consultancy support and advice to assist with clients' day-to-day operational issues as they arise

Government is looking for applicants with at least five years of experience in a consultancy role, along with a Master's degree in Business Administration, Management Science or a similar professional qualification.
