Wrong number on phone bills

Cable and Wireless has promised to credit customers who dialled local numbers but were billed for international calls.

The company said yesterday that a billing anomaly during October meant some customers were wrongly charged for calling local numbers which are forwarded to international destinations.

Cable and Wireless spokeswoman Charmaine Burgess said: "Cable and Wireless apologises for this and we have taken steps to place proactive credits for those calls on all affected customer accounts. These credits will appear on customer bills in the month of November."

Some of the customers wrongly charged had called Bank of Bermuda. A bank spokeswoman said: "Bank of Bermuda customers who called the bank's call centre number, 299-5959, from October 5 to November 5 were incorrectly billed for a long distance call.

"Bank of Bermuda worked together with Cable and Wireless to identify those customers who were affected by the billing anomaly. Cable and Wireless have reversed the charges and credited customers' accounts."
