Birds of a feather fundraise together

Premier Dr. Ewart Brown admires the flamingos brought into the Island to help the Bermuda Zoological Society raise funds for the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo while Aquarium principal curator Dr. Ian Walker looks on outside Camden, the Premier's official residence, in the Botanical Gardens.

Hot pink flamingos will soon litter lawns all over the Island as part of a fundraiser for the Bermuda Zoological Society.

The "Flamingo Flocking Fundraiser" was launched yesterday at Camden by Premier Dr. Ewart Brown.

Its aim is to raise money for educational programmes at the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo (BAMZ).

Flocks of flamingos will be available to private and corporate participants who wish to surprise relatives, friends and colleagues by paying to have a flock of the birds planted on their properties.

There are three flocks.

BAMZ principal curator Ian Walker said: "We're tickled pink to launch this campaign that we hope the whole community will have fun with. While it promises lots of fun, the initiative has a serious purpose all funds raised will benefit BZS environmental education and important conservation projects."

BZS volunteer coordinator Joanne Chisnall said: "Flamingo flocking should be done with good intentions and we suggest participants choose 'victims' with a sense of humour. We want this fundraiser to be fun and safe for all involved, including our precious, but tacky, pink flamingos."

Dr. Brown said flamingos are his favourite birds. He said he was eight years old when they were first brought here as BAMZ residents.

"I think this is indeed a unique fundraiser. I commend those who are doing this in order to raise the necessary funds for an important venture in our community.

"I would urge those in the private sector and Government to support this wholeheartedly."

Flamingos can be ordered on the flamingo flocking hotline 293-4464 extension 130.

Every evening, members of the BZS flocking crew will deliver about 20 of the bright plastic birds to the lawn or office of unsuspecting targets, where they will remain for 24 hours.

Residential flocking costs $50 to sponsor and corporate flocking is $250. Anti-flocking insurance is also available at $50, for those who do not wish to have flamingos on their lawn.
