Police are investigating a fatal shooting on St. Monica’s Road Saturday morning.

It is understood a 30-year-old Pembroke man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was found in a blue car at about 5 a.m. He was taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Saturday morning armed Police and the forensic unit were searching the St. Monica’s Road area for clues to the shooting.

The Police mobile command centre was also stationed at the junction of St. Monica’s Road and Glebe Road as tempers ran high as young men filed in and out of a nearby home, some yelling profanities at Police as children gathered for church service at the Pembroke Seventh Day Adventist church.

Superintendent Antoine Daniels said the public could expect roadside stops throughout the Island this weekend. Police will also be conducting stop and searches.

The shooting is believed to related to an on-going turf war, with many saying a retaliatory attack is sure to come.

The victim was described as popular and a well-known figure in the area, some going as far as to say he was “the face of St. Monica’s Road”.

This morning Police issued a statement which said: “Around 5 a.m. Saturday, Police received a report of gunshots in the St. Monica’s Mission area of Pembroke.

“Units responded along with an ambulance and a 32-year-old Pembroke man was discovered suffering from gun shot wounds. He was taken to KEMH where he later died as a result of his injuries. No information as to the identity of the victim will be given until the next of kin has been notified.

Labour, Home Affairs and Housing Minister, David Burch issued a statement yesterday which said: "First and foremost, my thoughts go out to the victim’s friends and family.

"Saturday morning, I like the rest of Bermuda awoke to the sad and shocking news that a man had been gunned down while we slept. I have had a full report from the Police.

"However in circumstances such as this, I believe it important to renew my call for members of the public, particularly in the St. Monica’s Road area, that if they heard anything this morning or know anything about this latest  incident to please come forward and assist the Police in their efforts of solving this crime.

"I am assured that the Police will work around the clock to bring the individual or individuals to justice. However they need the cooperation of the public."

“There is already a significant Police presence in this neighbourhood and others where there is a potential for inter-gang violence. In addition to those officers, Police have specialist officers at the scene from the Serious Crime Unit, Forensic Support Unit and Community Action Teams to assist with the active investigation into this fatal shooting.”
