Breaking News: Court rules against decision to terminate Caribbean officers from force
Five Police officers from the Caribbean won a court order overturning a decision to terminate them from the force.
The officers argued they had a legitimate expectation — according to letters from former Police Commissioner George Jackson — that they would be kept on permanently.
However, new Commissioner Michael DeSilva opted not to renew their contracts, citing performance issues.
The officers — Romeo Allen, a constable, Emmerson Donald, a detective constable, and Courtney Williams, a sergeant, who are all from Jamaica, plus Adrian George, a constable from Trinidad and Tobago and Cletus Cyris, a constable from St. Lucia — took the matter to the Supreme Court.
This afternoon they won a ruling from Puisne Judge Ian Kawaley that they have the right to keep their jobs. They also won in the region of $20,000 costs.
