Breaking News: Diel receives two years' probation

A teenager who used racial slurs towards a Police officer was sentenced to two years’ probation today.

Michael Coles Diel told an officer on August 26: “I’m going to f**k you up n*gger. You don’t know who you’re messing with.”

The 19-year-old pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court last month, to using offensive words.

Diel is the son of Mark Diel, a partner in the law firm Marshall, Diel & Myers.

His lawyer Richard Horseman today told the court the remarks were out of character and the result of a combination of too much alcohol and medication rather than racism.

He said his client was due to leave for university tomorrow.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner sentenced Diel to two years' probation.

He also ordered he undergo therapy for alcohol abuse, adding that Diel would be allowed to continue university abroad if Probation Services deem it acceptable.
