Club releases liquor price list to combat 'negativity' about changes

Somerset Cricket Club have released their drinks price list for next week's Cup Match in an attempt to combat the 'negativity' surrounding their partnership with 441 Productions.

For the first time the public will be required to buy some of their alcohol from an official supplier inside the ground, and will be limited to only bringing in unopened soft drinks and pre-made swizzle.

While this has led to accusations that Somerset are punishing the public, club treasurer Terrence Bean, and Andrew Holmes of 441 Productions insist that couldn't be further from the truth.

Responding to a comment from MP Darius Tucker in the House of Assembly on Monday, where Mr Tucker said the prices Somerset were asking 'are more expensive than various other entities out there in the public arena', the club released their prices for the two day Classic, and in many cases they are cheaper or comparable to retail prices.

"The people that's making the most of this noise about Somerset Cricket Club and 411 (sic) Productions are the 20 percent of all people who have been getting their stuff at wholesale," said Mr Bean.

"The rest of us, we have to pay what's on that list. So the 20 percent are the ones that are putting all this negativity out to the public, because you know what, instead of them paying $35 for a case, they're now going to pay $40."

Somerset are charging between $40 and $45 for a case of 24 beers, with Corona going for $44 dollars, Budweiser $40, and Heineken $45.

The biggest saving comes if you buy a case of Magners, which retails at nearly $78 in some shops in Somerset, but will be available for just $50.

The same is true for spirits, with most prices matching the retail value in shops, although people choosing to drink Beefeater Gin, and El Dorado three-year-old will be paying a couple of dollars more per bottle.

And Mr Holmes insisted his company was looking to provide a first class service, and would supply any drink that people could want, provided it was available on the Island.

"We're not limiting any sort of products from Cup Match, it's bigger than you and I, and it's for the people," said Holmes. "Therefore they can order whatever beverages they want, if they're available locally, we're going to provide them.

"Some people had the reaction, 'we've always done this in the past now you're stopping me', and that's always going to be the reaction to change.

"But I think after we have explained to them that the pricing is retail, the product selection is whatever is available from local wholesalers, and the fact that we will be delivering it to them... when we had a meeting with plot holders most of them walked away with a smile saying 'this is a great service'.

"We're going to be there around the clock providing a first class service, and they don't have to lug all their beer with them every morning."
