February is Oral Health Month
The Department of Health is encouraging residents to take better care of their teeth with this month being Oral Health month.
The Oral Health section of the department released a statement yesterday inviting employees of organisations across Bermuda to learn about how better oral health may improve their overall health.
The statement said: "Untreated gingivitis eventually develops into periodontal disease, a chronic infection which causes loss of bone support and loosening of teeth.
"Research in recent years has established that poor periodontal health is a risk factor for individuals with diabetes and heart disease. Periodontal disease may also play a role in the occurrence of preterm low birth weights and respiratory disorders."
It has been established that diabetes is a factor in the development of periodontal disease and that periodontal disease can cause the diabetic to have elevated and unstable blood sugar levels.
In the case of heart disease, research indicates that individuals with periodontal disease are at higher risk for heart attack.
To improve oral health, the department suggest members of the public should:
— Use a tooth brushing timer to get into the habit of brushing for a minimum of two minutes twice daily
— Use of a fluoride containing toothpaste
— Use a tongue scraper to remove bacteria and debris
— Attend your dentist regularly and have a dental cleaning every six months.
