Gunshots were heard near children's party

Police question a man after a firearms incident last Saturday near Admiralty House Park, Spanish Point. A children's birthday party was being held nearby at the time of the reported gunshots.

Gunshots rang out less than a hundred yards from a children's birthday party in Spanish Point, but the intended target escaped injury.

On Saturday afternoon, while many Bermudians were preparing for Hurricane Igor, Police say shots were fired on the St. John's Hill area of Pembroke.

A short distance away, at Admiralty Park, a birthday party was being held.

One Spanish Point resident, who asked not to be named, said: "The people doing this stuff just don't care. Kids were out there on a bouncy castle just around the corner.

"It's getting to the point you don't want to leave your house."

Another person said: "This is a real close knit community. We all know each other here.

"For something like this to happen so near our children, it's terrifying."

It is believed that the intended victim was riding a motorcycle towards Spanish Point when he was fired upon.

A Police spokesman said: "Police responded to a report of gunfire in the Spanish Point Road area. Officers attended the scene and conducted inquires, however there were no injuries reported.

Police said that investigations into the shooting are ongoing.

The incident was just one of a series of shootings in the last week which have injured three men and sparked anger and frustration in the community.

On Monday two 22-year-olds were shot riding a motorcycle on Friswells Road.

That incident was followed on Thursday with shots being fired outside the First Church of God on North Shore and David Godwin being shot outside Art Mel's Spicy Dicy Restaurant on St. Monica's Road.
