Narrow lane and speedy motorists don't mix

Residents fear an accident is waiting to happen as parents speed along a narrow lane to drop their children off at preschool.

David Lopes said motorists charge along the tiny Lightbourne Lane, Smith's, as they take their youngsters to Montessori Preparatory School, threatening to crash into vehicles coming the other way.

"The parents fly along here," said Mr. Lopes, the long-serving radio host whose farm borders the road.

Mr. Lopes said his father had the road widened many years ago, by moving the farm wall, but that it's still too narrow for anyone to go at any speed.

"We all have to use this road together. It's too bad that people can't think about that when they drive too fast along it," he said.

When The Royal Gazette visited Lightbourne Lane yesterday, it was impossible for two vehicles to pass in opposite directions.

Smith's West MP Trevor Moniz said: "A lot of people say this road should be widened. The trouble is the parents drop off their children and then try to get out while people are coming the other way."
