Neighbours call for CCTV near Elliot School

Residents are calling for CCTV in an area next to Elliot Primary School said to be a magnet for congregating youths.

Young people are said to gather and drink in the evenings on a grassy spot at Devon Spring Road's junction with Hermitage Road, bordering the school's football field. Bottles were strewn around when Up Your Street called by.

Because it's behind a hedge, the location is considered attractive for nefarious activity in an otherwise quiet neighbourhood — but Devonshire East MP Bob Richards believes the problem could be solved instantly by simply putting a camera on a tree.

Elliot principal Cathy Bassett stressed the area is trouble-free during school hours, with loiterers responding positively when asked to leave.

But she said neighbours had discussed the situation in a meeting at the school.

"One recommendation was to put CCTV up there to look at what's going on in the specific area," Mr. Bassett told The Royal Gazette.

"It's not only a school there, but local businesses as well."

Mr. Richards said he has seen up to 15 people loitering at certain times of the year.

"It's a nice spot to hang out but unfortunately you can see from the beer bottles what goes on here," he said. "I believe the choice of intoxication ranges further than just beer. This is just 20 yards from the school.

"It would be great to have a CCTV camera right on the tree. That would probably solve the whole thing."
