Biologist and environmental journalist Sangita Iyer yesterday claimed Bermuda is the perfect place to start implementing alternative energy sources such as biodiesel.

Ms Iyer was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of the Hamilton Rotary Club yesterday. She spoke of the Bermuda Environmental Alliance (BEA), an organisation which she helped form. Made up of local charities and environmentalists the BEA is dedicated to preserving Bermuda's natural beauty and educating the public on environmental issues.

Ms Iyer, who has previously worked as a news anchor for local station ZBM, has been producing a series of films to be shown in Canada about Bermuda.

The films expose viewers to the culture and environment of the Island. Bermudian water-catching roofs, Bermuda Cahows and many other cultural and environmental aspects of the Island are captured in the films.

At the meeting, Ms Iyer showed several clips from the series.

One of the films shown highlighted the work being done by scientists at BIOS to find ways of harnessing energy from ocean algae. Another clip described how Bermuda's unique water-catching roofs work.

The film displayed the roof building process and its environmentally friendly design. –Ms Iyer used her time to urge Rotarians to embrace alternative energy sources and kick their "oil addiction".
